A Canadian City Will Ban Plastic Bags, The Maximum Fine Reached $10,000
Nov 16, 2022
Nowdays, plastic is everywhere around us, it will take hundreds of years to break down into tiny pieces of plastics.
Under such circumstances, many countries are taking measures to ban the plastic, such as the Canadian city Sault Ste. Marie.
From November 15, plastic bags for carrying supermarket goods or using for packaging delivered food will be banned.
Excluding the bags for packaging fruits, vegetables, nuts, candy and pet wastes.
Bags used to protect clothing or linens after professional laundering or dry cleaning, medical supplies, tire protection, plastic straws in hospital, medical facilities or long-term care facilities are also exempt.
By February 8, 2023, plastic cutlery, straws, and plastic food service ware will be banned.
In some large grocery chains, the single-use plastic bags has been replaced with various cloth, paper bag or bring-your-own options.
For the people who violate the plastic ban, penalties include a fine of $500 and in cases of multiple offences the fine is $500 each day up to a limit of $10,000.
The penalty provisions will come into effect by August 8, 2023.
The plastic ban is good for the environment. What we need to do is to find eco-friendly materials to replace plastic. Such as bamboo, wood or other biodegradable materials. The products like cups, bowls and straws made from bagasse or cornstarch are also a good option.
